Sik Sik Yuen Launches First Flag Day

Donation Supports Medical and Emergency Needs

Released: 9 August 2008, Hong Kong, China

Sik Sik Yuen (the “Yuen”), religious charity organization, was pleased to launch its first ever Flag Day in Hong Kong today. The charity fundraiser was supported by 1,830 volunteers, aged from 11 to 79, from various segments of society. Proceeds will be donated to support medical and emergency needs in the Wong Tai Sin community.

Mr Lee Yiu Fai, Chairman of Sik Sik Yuen said: “We are very proud that so many volunteers, from all backgrounds and ages, supported our event. Their objective was simply to serve and contribute to the community.”

Mr Ng Kwok-keung, Vice-chairman cum Chairman of Social Services Committee of Sik Sik Yuen, said: “There were 756 volunteers from the elderly group alone, with the eldest participant aged 79.”

“Another 1,074 volunteers were students, and the youngest, accompanied by his parents, was in primary five. These volunteers all have busy schedules, but still found time to support Wong Tai Sin district and serve the community.”

Ms Lee Oi-ku, a 69-years-old member from Ho Chui District Community Centre for Senior Citizens (Sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen), shy but exuberant, said: “I have never participated into any flay days in my life. I was nervous but delighted to support my community by giving my time.”

Sik Sik Yuen’s first Flag Day was staged across Kowloon, from Wong Tai Sin, Sham Shui Po, Kwun Tong and Kowloon City to Tsim Sha Tsui, Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok.

The volunteers were from various segments of society and age groups, from the elderly to parents and students. But age difference was no boundary to preventing them working together to help needy groups in society. Their involvement demonstrated power of trust and spirit of harmony.

Proceeds will go to the “Sik Sik Yuen Wong Wan Tin Benevolence Fund”, helping needy groups in the Wong Tai Sin community, including medical and emergency support.
